Marcel Du Champ bucked against the world by taking an everyday urinal, signing his name on it and calling it talent. The same thing is happening today with the new wave of art which doesn’t need an expensive frame and doesn’t charge any commission. This is what is loosely called street art and it’s all around you. Starting with a few kids drawing obscenities on loathed neighbours’ walls, it has grown into a major part of popular culture. It ranges from expansive murals to hasty scribbles from a passerby. “You frown now, but one day this will be considered as one of my “early works,” writes one such aspiring artist on a bathroom door. This bit of text by 21st century standards is most definitely art.
